Rutgers Traveled to Philadelphia Saturday morning to race some Dad Vail and ACRA competition at the Kerr Cup. The race schedule was shifted earlier in the day and compressed to try and avoid high wind warnings later in the day. This meant very little rest between the heats and finals; good news for tough Rutgers Oarsmen! The Varsity started the day off with an easy advancement into the Grand Final from their heat. The JV had a great first race and also advanced from their heat to the Grand Final. After just 40 minutes on shore between races the Varsity lined up for the Grand Final. The wind had picked up at this point and it was going to be a long race. Rutgers had a great start to keep them in the race and midway though was able to dig in and finish 3rd behind Drexel and Lasalle. More importantly the Varsity was 6 seconds ahead of Bucknell and 9 seconds ahead of Virginia, both of whom are promising to be tough competition at ACRA later this year. The JV faced similarly challenging conditions but were bested by the other crews finishing 6th in the Regatta. To close out the day the 3V8 had a tough race into a driving headwind against Drexel, Bucknell and Virginia. Rutgers was able to dig deep and fight back from 4th at halfway though the race to finish ahead of Bucknell. A great result for the 3V8 since this is mostly a novice boat and only learned to row this fall. Overall, a great weekend for Rutgers! The team now looks ahead towards Final Exams. There are 10 days of hard training ahead to try and find those extra few seconds before exams begin. Dad Vails is May 12&13 on the Cooper River in Camden! We look forward to seeing some Scarlet Knights on the banks cheering on Crew.
